Friedrich Merz. From young politicians to prospective chancellors

If a CDU candidate does take power, he may go against the expectations of German citizens and EU politicians.

Since October 17, Friedrich Merz has been the official candidate for the post of chancellor of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and its sister party the CSU of Bavaria. If we believe the opinion polls and decisions taken by mainstream parties at the moment, it is very likely that Merz will become chancellor in a year or so.

Joachim Merz, father of the future chancellor, grew up in Wrocław. However, when he was 17, he joined the army. However, of his four years of service, he spent 3.5 years in Soviet captivity, and when he returned to post-war Germany, he searched for his family through the Red Cross (he eventually found them in Westphalia).
