Former Turkish football player, Akin, was shot

Former Turkish national football player Serhat Akin was injured in the leg due to gunfire in Istanbul. The 43-year-old previously accompanied the television broadcast of his former club Fenerbahçe’s 2-1 win against Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League as a commentator on Thursday evening. “They shot my leg after the event,” Akin wrote on platform X alongside a photo showing a bleeding right ankle.

According to state news agency Anadolu, Akin was later hospitalized. According to the report, images from surveillance cameras showed the alleged attacker fleeing on a motorbike. The background to the incident was initially unclear. Turkish Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak, the Turkish Football Association and Fenerbahce condemned the attack on Akin.

The 43-year-old was born in Bretten in Baden-Württemberg and also played several second division games in Germany for Karlsruher SC and 1. FC Köln.
