Former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., on Thursday paid tribute to President Joe Biden, whom she called a “decent man from Delaware,” before urging Americans to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
“On January 8, 2011, a man tried to assassinate me. … I almost died, but I fought for my life and survived,” Giffords said, referring to the mass shooting at a Tucson rally when she was a congresswoman.
She added: “So many people looked up to me as I worked hard to recover, including a decent man from Delaware who always checked in. He still does.”
“Thank you. Joe Biden, thank you for everything,” Giffords continued, telling the audience, “Joe is a great president. My friend Kamala is going to be a great president.”
Earlier in her speech, Giffords talked about the grit she was “born with,” adding that she “grew up racing motorcycles, mugging stalls and exploring the beautiful desert” in Arizona.
He then paid tribute to Harris with the same word, telling the convention hall that Harris “is tough; he has sense. The bad guys can beat the gun lobby. He can fight the gun trade.”
His speech came shortly after the convention’s prime-time program focused on preventing gun violence.
Earlier in the program, Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Ga., who lost her son to gun violence in 2012, spoke with other gun violence survivors and activists.
