The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has recognized Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Judit Polgar of Hungary as the greatest grandmasters of all time. The information about this is published on the organization’s official page on the social network X.
Carlsen and Polgar received their awards on Thursday at a gala in Budapest marking FIDE’s centenary.
Polgar, who retired in 2014, led the federation’s women’s rankings from 1989 to 2015. As a member of the Hungarian women’s team, she won gold at the World Chess Olympiads in 1988 and 1990. She also twice won silver medals in the competition as part of the men’s national team.
Carlsen held the title of world champion for 10 years: from 2013 to 2023, successfully defending his chess crown four times. The athlete voluntarily refused the fifth defense and the title went to the Chinese Ding Liren, who defeated the Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi in the title match.
On May 21, Russian chess player Ivan Zemlyansky became the youngest grandmaster in the world at the age of 13 years and eight months. The boy surpassed the performance of Anish Giri, who became a grandmaster at the age of 14 years and seven months.
