An incident occurred near President Donald Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to his campaign team, shots were fired there and the US presidential candidate was not injured. The FBI suspects that there was an assassination attempt on the former president, as the US media has repeatedly reported.
Police reported the arrest. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that the man was stopped on the highway about 70 kilometers north of the golf course. She is believed to be connected to a shooting that occurred near the golf course. The suspect appeared calm and composed.
Police said an AK-47 assault rifle with a telescopic sight and camera was found in bushes at the scene of the crime. The man was also found with a rifle scope.
The man was reportedly hundreds of meters away from President Trump.
West Palm Beach Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said at a news conference that while Trump was playing golf, the man hid a gun in the bushes near the fence of Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach. The man was about 350 to 450 meters away from Trump. He also had two backpacks hanging on the fence and a GoPro camera. Ceramic tiles were found in the backpacks. All items are currently being reviewed.
Bradshaw also reported that one of Trump’s Secret Service agents was walking around the golf course when he saw the gun barrel sticking out of the fence. The agent immediately opened fire, firing four to six shots. The suspect then dropped the weapon and ran away. The witness wrote down the license plate number and gave it to police.
Trump: “I’m OK”
“There was a shooting near me, but I wish you would have heard this before the rumors spread,” Trump said in an email shortly after the incident. Nothing will stop him, and he “will never surrender,” Trump continued.
His campaign team and the Secret Service had previously announced that Trump was safe. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. local time, according to the Secret Service. The exact circumstances were long unclear. Even after hours, it was not clear whether only Secret Service agents had fired shots or whether the alleged assassin had also fired.
Harris and Biden appear relieved
The White House said President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed, and both expressed relief that Trump was not injured.
Republican Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance wrote:
On July 13, a gunman opened fire on Trump from a nearby rooftop at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was wounded by a bullet in his right ear, and the assailant was shot and killed by security forces shortly after. One attendee was killed and two others were wounded.
