Only about 1,500 pensioners who worked in East Germany throughout their lives will receive money from the so-called East German hardship fund. This is the federal government’s response to a request from Leipzig Bundestag member Søren Fehlmann (Die Linke). According to the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, by the end of January 31, 2024, around 168,000 applications had been submitted to the foundation that manages the fund.
