A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck shortly before Monday at 11 p.m. local time in Greece. Its epicenter was near the island of Evia, east of Athens. The shock was felt in Attica, including in the Greek capital.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, and its the epicenter was 18 km east of the town of Istiea, in the north of the island of Evia.
There is no information about damage or injuries.
Greece is located on major geological faults and earthquakes are frequent, although their epicenters are generally located at sea and there are no fatalities.
In 1999, 143 people died in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Athens and the surrounding area.
