As the UK transitions from summer to autumn, there could be an unexpected danger lurking in our cars – yes, they’re spiders. In the UK, spider season usually runs from September to mid-October, when these arachnids are most active and visible. In search of mates, they often come into our homes and vehicles.

Whether you hate spiders or love them, a significant infestation can be dangerous. Drivers can face up to nine penalty points and a £2,500 fine for careless driving, with even more severe penalties possible depending on the nature of the incident. To help people avoid this potential hazard, Pamela Murdock, vehicle expert at AvailableCar, has offered some advice on how to keep spiders at bay this fall.

He emphasized the importance of concentration while driving, saying: “It is vital that all drivers concentrate 100 per cent on what they are doing when they are behind the wheel and any distraction, big or small, can be fatal.”

He added: “If your concentration is suddenly distracted by something inside the vehicle, this could mean driving without due care and attention, or careless driving. If a spider appears, it is important to remain calm and keep both hands on the wheel to stay in control of the vehicle, if possible, find a safe place pull over to remove the spider without endangering yourself or others on the road.”

What can I do to keep spiders away?

Fill your car with smells that spiders don’t like

Spiders hate strong smells like lemon, lime, orange, peppermint and tea tree. You can create your own solution by combining essential oils with water and spritzing it on your car or by purchasing an air freshener. Lavender is also said to repel spiders, but due to its sleep-inducing properties, it is not suitable for use in the car.

Add cinnamon sticks to the car door

Spiders also hate the smell of cinnamon. Instead of just using it in pumpkin spiced lattes and holiday treats, consider placing cinnamon sticks in your car doors. This will not only give your car a pleasant smell, but also works as a great substitute for those who are not big fans of essential oils.

Keep your car clean

To repel spiders, keep your car clean inside and out. and make sure you do it regularly, not only to deter spiders, but also the insects they prey on, such as flies. Food left in your vehicle can attract insects, which in turn can attract spiders. White vinegar is an effective cleaning agent for the interior of your car and also acts as a spider repellent. Be on the lookout for spider webs on the outside of your car, especially near areas like side mirrors. Since spiders are attracted to moisture, be sure to dry your car completely after washing.

Using a car cover overnight can also help prevent spiders from settling inside.

Silica gel packs, often found in packaging to keep products dry, can be placed in your car to reduce moisture. Spiders are drawn to moist environments, so keeping your car dry can make it less attractive. Place a few packages in separate parts of your car, such as under the seats or in the glove compartment. It should go without saying, but always make sure the doors and windows are fully closed when you’re not in your car to prevent spiders from getting in when you’re not looking. If you’re working on the car, whether it’s cleaning or servicing, make sure you close any doors or windows you’re not using to prevent them from sneaking in.
