Drivers warned of £400 charge that could face motorists in UK’s 33C heatwave

Justin Hall, Engineering Supremo at IMO Car Wash has previously warned that UV rays can cause major problems with bodywork damage.

He explained: “Warmer weather is just what we need after a miserable start to summer, but if you’re a vehicle owner it’s important to remember that heat can damage your car.”

“Powerful UV rays can cause paint pigments to degrade, leading to discoloration, while high temperatures can cause metal parts of a vehicle to expand and contract, leading to warping and misalignment.

“Meanwhile, prolonged exposure to heat can cause small cracks in the windshield and expansion of the windows, which can prove dangerous for unwitting drivers.”

CheckaTrade’s experts have highlighted that bodywork damage can cost up to £70 to repair.

However, extensive paint damage can add up to £330, a big blow for those on tight budgets.

Leading garage comparison website BookMyGarage has put the figure at closer to £400, while a full car re-spray can set owners back around £2,500.

However, according to Justin, high temperatures can also have drastic consequences for some of the most important components under the hood.

He added: “You need to be aware not only of the cosmetic concerns, but also the heat affects the performance of your car.

“Keeping the vents and grills clean of debris is crucial in preventing electrical system failures and ensuring optimal cooling.

“Regular washing can help this process by keeping the engine compartment clean of dust and debris, which is essential to prevent the engine from overheating.”
