The union representing maritime workers at the Port of Montreal has begun a three-day strike at two terminals.

The Maritime Employers Association confirmed that the work stoppage began Monday at 7 a.m. ET at the Viau and Maisonneuve Termont terminals.

The strike is expected to continue until Thursday morning.

The local union, affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Public Employees, said about 350 members will be part of the job action.

The maritime transport workers’ contract with the Maritime Employers Association expired on December 31, 2023.

The association issued a statement on Sunday saying it had tried “every possible means” to avoid a strike. She said neither the mediation nor the emergency meeting with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board were fruitful.
