Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck wants to find a political solution to the dispute between the EU and China over car tariffs. The Green politician said this before meeting Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao in Berlin. Habeck said his interest, apart from the startup summit, was to find a political solution. The Chinese side seems ready for this.
Habek mentioned a conversation he had with the trade minister during his visit to China in June. He also talked about a very open, difficult, but very honest conversation. “We really put the freeform in a box, if I may say so,” he said. But there was no public disclosure, so there was trust.
The EU announced in June that it would raise tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles after a month-long investigation. This means Chinese manufacturers will have to accept additional charges on top of the standard import tariffs on electric vehicles. According to Brussels, Chinese manufacturers are unfairly benefiting from government subsidies and are distorting the EU market with cheap cars. China accuses the EU of protectionism and has already responded with an investigation into pork imports from the EU, among other things.
