Deals: Google Pixel 9 series now available with free storage upgrades and trade-in bonus

By far the biggest launch of the week was the launch of the Google Pixel 9 series. The search giant unveiled two new flagships, a new near-flagship phone, and a new foldable, all of which are currently up for pre-order.

In the UK, phones come with a free storage upgrade – this usually means getting the 256GB model for the price of the 128GB model. However, on higher-end phones, you can get the 512GB model for the price of the 256GB model (the new Fold starts at 256GB, so 512GB is currently your only option).

Let’s first look at the Google Pixel 9. Both Google and Amazon are offering a £150 trade-in bonus for your old device – and that’s a good thing, because trade-in prices are terrible. A Pixel 8 in good condition is priced at just £165, which equates to £315 with the bonus added. The iPhone 15 comes in at a more respectable £463 (including the bonus), while the Galaxy S23 is priced at £310, less than the Pixel. For older devices, such as the Pixel 7 or Galaxy S22, the trade-in bonus is usually higher than the trade-in value.

Both the Google Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL come with a slightly higher trade-in bonus of £200. On top of that, you get a free year of Gemini Advanced (normally £19 per month).

Note that availability is limited when it comes to color and storage choices. For example, the Pixel 9 Pro XL in Rose Quartz is only available in a 256GB version. The little Pro maxes out at 256GB when you look at the Porcelain and Rose Quartz versions, but upgrading to Hazel or Obsidian also reveals a 512GB option. Google could stock up on more color/storage combinations, but keep in mind that the free storage upgrade offer ends on September 5.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold increases the trade-in bonus to £300, and you get a free upgrade to the 512GB model. The original Pixel Fold is priced at £581 (including the bonus), the Galaxy Z Fold4 (the latest option in the trade-in menu) will set you back £491 (again, that includes the £300 bonus). As we said, the trade-in deal is mostly covered by the bonus, as the value of old phones is quite low. You get a free year of Gemini Advanced, for what it’s worth.

Google has launched a new 45W charger, which you’ll need to get maximum charging speeds out of your Pixel 9 Pro – the old 35W charger just won’t cut it. That said, if you have a USB-PD charger you’re happy with, you can skip this step.

The new Google Pixel Watch 3 comes in two sizes: 41mm and 45mm, while the Watch 2 was only available in 41mm. The 45mm option gives you a larger 1.4” display (up from 1.2”) and a bigger 420mAh battery. We’ve included links to the Wi-Fi watches below, but you can get the LTE version for £100 more.

Finally, Google has unveiled the new Pixel Buds Pro 2. This is the first time its custom Tensor chips have ventured into the TWS bud form factor, but they promise huge improvements in noise cancellation (2x in the 400Hz-2kHz range). ANC automatically adjusts to your surroundings. The buds are stemless (ahem, Samsung, ahem), and they promise long battery life (8 hours for the buds with ANC on, up to 30 hours with the case).
