A foreign government attempted to defeat a Liberal candidate and a former MP is suspected of working to influence parliamentary affairs on behalf of the foreign government, a public inquiry into interference in Canadian politics heard Friday.

Officials from the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) revealed two new examples of such foreign interference, in addition to four examples that have already been made public.

Officials did not name the people suspected in the latest examples. However, they said attempts by former lawmakers to influence parliamentary affairs did not have the desired impact foreign governments desired.

Officials say China is the most active country trying to interfere in Canada’s affairs, followed by India. However, they warned that the current conflicts in the Middle East could result in Iran trying to interfere in the next federal election.

There’s much more to come.
