Wisła coach Kazimierz Moskal made a bit of a surprise with his selection of players, putting Kamil Broda in goal instead of Anton Cziczkan, who had been performing well so far. Hungarian winger Tamas Kiss was given the opportunity to rehabilitate himself for irresponsible behavior and a red card in the 1st League game against Znicz Pruszków.
VAR saved Wisła from penalty kick
Wisła players did not start the match very well. In the 6th minute, the referee awarded a penalty for Wiktor Biedrzycki’s handball. However, the penalty was not awarded because the VAR referee intervened and noticed that Hugo Ahl had fouled Giannis Kiakos moments earlier.
After watching the incident on the monitor, the game was restarted with a free kick from the Krakow team. After that, not much happened on the field. The home team had a slight advantage, but did not create any goal opportunities.
Reliable Rodado gave Wisła the lead
In the 26th minute, Wisła unexpectedly took the lead. Angel Baena intercepted the ball and ran into the box, but his shot was saved by Ziga Frelih. However, the Spaniard recovered the ball, passed it to Angel Rodado, who put it in the net without any problems. This was the Wisła forward’s fourth goal in this edition of the European cups.
A moment later, Kiss shot from the penalty area but missed the target. Wisła defended wisely and the hosts posed no threat to Broda’s goal. He only had to prove his worth once, when in the 44th minute he made an effective intervention after a long-range shot by Filip Bainovic.
After the break, only Spartak scored
For the second half, the hosts’ coach introduced two players known for their participation in the top division – Roman Prochazka and Robert Pich.
Spartak launched an attack and equalized in the 47th minute. Michal Duris took advantage of a mistake by the Wisła defense and beat Broda with a precise shot from about 14 meters.
After an hour of play, the home team took the lead. Mikulec took the ball from Prochazka’s feet, but Philip Azango arrived close to the area and fired a great volley over Broda.
In the 64th minute it could have been 2-2. Baena passed to Rodado, whose shot ricocheted off the post. However, the home side’s next move was effective. Martin Mikovic crossed the ball into the box, Biedrzycki lost Duris’s marking and the former Slovak representative headed the ball easily into the net.
The crossbar and Broda saved Wisła from missing the fourth goal
Wisła players tried to reduce the size of the defeat, they made several good attacks, but they were unable to shoot effectively.
Spartak attacked more boldly in extra time and came close to scoring a fourth goal. After Mikovic’s shot from outside the area, the ball bounced off the post and then off the post, and Broda managed to catch it.
