Amazon and other companies have agreed to buy carbon offset credits that will support the conservation of the Amazon rainforest in Pará, in a deal worth around US$180 million (R$997 million), according to Forbes.

Amazon and at least five other companies will make the purchases through the LEAF Coalition forest conservation initiative, which was founded in 2021 with a group of companies and governments including the United States and Britain.

The agreement is LEAF’s first in the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, which is critical to curbing climate change because of the large amounts of greenhouse gases the trees absorb.

The Pará government and the LEAF Coalition shared details of the agreement for the first time exclusively with Reuters. Pará Governor Helder Barbalho (MDB) is expected to announce the deal on Tuesday evening (24), during New York Climate Week, when some 900 events will be held in conjunction with the UN General Assembly (United Nations).

“There is an important message, a company whose name refers to the Amazon, is doing its first commercialization with a state in the Amazon,” Barbalho told Reuters.
