Joseph Conrad wrote in his 1919 memoir, “The writer creates his own existence by continually evoking memories and seeking dialogue with shadows.” This approach is characteristic of all his novels and stories, which have lost none of their linguistic charm to this day. They have lost their political insight. But few other works have made Conrad’s shadows of his own memories so dark and dazzling at the same time.
