The Argentina national football team has been defeated by Colombia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The hosts beat the current world champions 2-1 in Barranquilla, meaning Colombia remains the only team from South America to remain undefeated in World Cup qualifiers.
Yerson Mosquera made it 1-0 in the 25th minute after an assist from former Bayern player James Rodriguez. Argentina’s Nicolás Gonzalez intercepted a pass from a player near the centre of the pitch and raced towards the goal to equalise for the visitors in the 48th minute. James finally scored the winning goal in the 60th minute after Nicolás Otamendi fouled Daniel Muñoz.
Despite the defeat, world champions Argentina continue to lead the South American standings with 18 points from eight games, ahead of the United States, Canada and Mexico in the World Cup finals. The top six teams qualify directly for the finals, while the seventh-placed team is relegated. In October, defending champions and national team coach Lionel Scaloni face Venezuela and Bolivia.
