1. FC Köln missed out on the second place in the Bundesliga. Despite their overwhelming lead against 1. FC Magdeburg, who are still undefeated, the Cologne team lost 1:2 (0:0) in front of 50,000 spectators. Damion Downs (49′) gave Cologne the lead, while Falko Michel (66′) and Jean Hugonet (83′) turned the game in the guests’ favor.
In a match between two attackingly strong teams, the hosts immediately took control after giving a ceremonial ovation to the late Christoph Daum. Cologne pressed hard and had a great chance to score but failed to score early on. Magdeburg’s Mohamed El Hankouri (19th) had a golden opportunity to open the scoring ahead of Tim Remperle. After a one-sided first half, the hosts were lucky when Martijn Kaars failed to finish the guests’ counterattack quickly enough.
After the restart, Cologne were more efficient and took the lead after a poor pass from Daniel Heber, who was then able to get down. Cologne had several more good chances and looked more confident. However, after a free kick from the visitors, substitute Mitchell equalised. It was Magdeburg’s fourth goal of the season. The home team continued to attack but Hugonnet (83′) scored from a deflected ball to give the visitors the lead.
