After the explosion at a cafe in Cologne, investigators still see no connection to a series of explosions in recent weeks. The background to the latest crime in the Pesch district on Wednesday may be more personal, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said.

The accused who reported to the police is related to the cafe owner. There is also no clear connection to the other explosions “in relation to the criminal act and the group of recipients”.

The ground-floor cafe of an apartment building in the Pesch district burned down on Wednesday morning. During the search, the suspect surrendered to police accompanied by his lawyer. After being questioned, he was released because no evidence was found during the search of his apartment. He denies the crime. He is still under investigation, the spokesman said.

The search continues for the second suspect who is still at large. In their search, police officers combed the designated garden without success.

There have been several explosions in and around Cologne in recent weeks. Investigators suspect they are linked to a dispute between drug gangs with ties to the Netherlands.
