The microwave oven is a device that is often forgotten in cleaning routines, but its interior can quickly accumulate food residues, grease and dirt, which causes unpleasant odors and dirt.

Experts have spoken exclusively to Express.co.uk to share their views on the best technique to disinfect your microwave and how often it should be done.

Plant-based biodegradable cleaning products cleaning professionals at method explained that to keep your microwave clean and fresh, you should aim to clean it regularly if you use it often.

They said: “The microwave is often neglected when it comes to cleaning – but over time, food, grease and grime build up can leave it smelly and dirty.

“As a rule of thumb, it’s best to give your microwave a thorough six at least once a week if you use it every day.”

Start by putting on rubber gloves and removing the turntable from the microwave.

You can either put it in the dishwasher or let it soak in soapy water for about 10 minutes before letting it dry.

Next, spray the inside of the microwave, including the door and walls, with your preferred cleaner—they recommended Clementine’s Method’s Daily Kitchen Cleaner.

Leave the cleaner on for a while to break down the grease and grime, then wipe everything clean.

The lemon scent not only helps neutralize odors, but also effectively repels grease and spills, leaving your microwave smelling fresh and vibrant.

Debbie Sandler, an expert in organizing and cleaning, previously posted a video on Instagram about the startling and “nasty” discovery in her microwave oven.

In a clip uploaded to the platform, he is seen removing the top panel of his drill-over microwave to reveal a hidden compartment full of old food and sauces.

The revelation naturally left the cleaning professional dumbfounded as he realized it was time to give it a good scrub and raise awareness.

“I bet your mouths are hanging open right now… am I right?” the content creator added the subtitle of the publication. “It was me when I found this out.”

Sandler noted that if your microwave is mounted above the stovetop, it likely has a similar hidden compartment that requires cleaning.

“It’s probably the nastiest thing in your kitchen,” he said in the video.

He recommended washing the removable top twice a year and changing the carbon filter in this compartment.
