CDU MP Thadäus König has been elected president of the new Thuringian state parliament. The 42-year-old man received 54 votes and thus achieved the required majority. He clearly won against Wiebke Muhsal who was promoted by the AfD. The 38 year old player received 32 votes. The CDU, BSW, Left and SPD have stated previously that they will not elect an AfD representative to the second-highest post in the state of Thuringia. The AfD, led by far-right Björn Höcke, is classified and monitored by the country’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a proven right-wing extremist party.
