Shortly after Brazil won 20 medals at the Paris Olympics, between July and August this year, preparations for the new Olympic cycle were strengthened this Tuesday (17). Caixa Econômica Federal announced, in Brasília, a new sponsorship of R$160 million to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), considered the largest Olympic authority in Brazil, affiliated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Caixa’s support will last until December 2028, including the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (USA), in July 2028.

This Tuesday, the president of the public bank, Carlos Vieira, and the president of the Committee, Paulo Wanderley, signed the contract in the presence of Olympic athletes, such as Caio Bonfim (athletics) and Rafael Silva (judo), as well as the presidents of sports confederations, such as athletics, boxing and canoeing.

Competition
According to Caixa Econômica Federal, the sponsorship of COB by banks and Caixa Lotteries aims to develop high-performance sport in Brazil, with the evolution of sporting results, revealing new talents and encouraging the practice of sport among young people and adults.

In addition to the upcoming Olympics, the major sporting events planned for this new sponsorship cycle are:

•⁠ ⁠Pan American Games Lima (PE) – 2027;

Olympic Athlete
Caixa reports that, since 1970, with the creation of the Sports Lottery, Caixa has allocated 10% of its total revenues, through lottery contests, to national football. And in the last two decades, to support the development of sports in the country, the bank has invested more than R$700 million in the Brazilian confederations of leading national and international sports and in sponsoring several football clubs.

Olympic Athlete
In all editions of the Olympics that Brazil participated in, the country won 40 gold medals; 49 silver and 81 bronze.

In Tokyo 2021, Brazil surpassed the record for medals won in a single edition and reached the podium 21 times (7 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze), in 13 sports. In Japan, Brazil finished 12th in the overall medal table. This unprecedented achievement equaled the number of gold medals won at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which was 7 units.

The Brazilian Olympic Committee website lists 465 athletes who have won Olympic medals in various editions of the games. Among them are Joaquim Cruz and Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, in athletics; Hortência and Paula, in basketball; Maurren Maggi, long jump; artistic gymnasts Rebeca Andrade, Arthur Zanetti, Arthur Nory, Diego Hypolito; judokas Aurélio Miguel, Beatriz Souza and Sarah Menezes; swimmers Gustavo Borges, Fernando Scherer (Xuxa), Cesar Cielo; Beatriz Ferreira, in boxing; Marta, in women’s football; Tande, Giovane, Giba, Ana Moser and Virna Dias, in volleyball; Gabriel Medina and Ítalo Ferreira, in surfing; Rayssa Leal, in skateboarding.
