ByteDance Unveils Jimeng AI, a Text-to-Video Platform That Could Compete with OpenAI Sora

ByteDance, the Beijing-based tech giant known for TikTok, has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered text-to-video platform. Dubbed Jimeng AI, the platform lets users generate both images and videos from text suggestions. The platform is set to launch on both Apple’s App Store and Android as mobile apps, but is only available to users in China. According to the report, the platform does not have a free tier, and a subscription is required to use it. Jimeng AI joins other AI video platforms such as Runway, Pika AI, and OpenAI’s yet-to-launch Sora.

The Jimeng AI platform was developed by Faceu Technology, owned by ByteDance, and offers image and video generation capabilities. According to a Reuters report, the platform was released as a mobile app on the App Store on August 6 for Chinese users. The app was previously released for Android on July 31.

Gadgets 360 found that the site’s client can be accessed even outside of China, but you need to create an account to use it. Currently, Jimeng AI only lets people with registered Douyin (known as TikTok outside of China) accounts log in to the platform.

Since the platform doesn’t have a free tier, registered users can’t generate images and videos until they choose a plan. According to Reuters, there are three plans to choose from. A monthly auto-renewing plan costs CNY 69 (roughly 808 rupees), while a one-month subscription will cost users CNY 79 (roughly 926 rupees). An annual plan costs CNY 659 (roughly 7,726 rupees). Each plan reportedly allows users to generate around 2,050 images or 168 videos per month.

Moving on to the features, there is basic image and video generation from natural language text messages. The generated images can also be edited and enhanced with follow-up messages. Once generated in Jimeng AI, users can share them with others via URL or save them to their device. There is an Explore page where users can share their work and others can comment on them.

In addition, a Personalized Creations feature has been added, which allows users to replicate and customize the work of others using their prompts. It is unclear exactly how this feature works. It is also unclear whether the platform will integrate with Douyin (TikTok) to allow users to create content for the platform using AI.
