The BRT bus driver involved in a crash Saturday morning (9/21) in Rio de Janeiro underwent surgery on both ankles, according to O Globo newspaper.
The Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, where Douglemar da Silva Rocha underwent surgery, reported his condition was stable.
The surgical procedure, detailed by the health unit, saved the man’s ankle. “The management of the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital informed that the patient underwent orthopedic surgery and is in stable condition. There was no amputation,” the report said.
The driver was taken to a medical unit by the Fire Department, according to the city’s Health Department. He spent three hours trapped in the wreckage.
At least 64 people were injured in the crash. Of those, seven were treated at the scene and released. The rest needed to be taken to the hospital.
The accident occurred after a passenger vehicle crashed into the concrete structure of the Gasometer bridge. Initial information, the BRT driver suffered a sudden illness.
