BMW: Stricter CO2 requirements in 2025.

Munich

Carmaker BMW believes there is no need to ease European CO2 emission standards from 2025. BMW has consistently exceeded the requirements in recent years and is therefore “confident that we will also achieve the more stringent vehicle targets in 2025. Therefore, there is no need to set a target for 2025,” the company announced in Munich on Thursday.

This means that BMW is differentiating itself from Volkswagen and the industry association VDA. “Electricity will dominate, but it will take time,” said Hans Dieter Pötsch, chairman of the Volkswagen Supervisory Board. “That is why we have to adjust and adapt our CO2 targets for 2025, 2030 and 2035 to reality.”

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing supports calls to bring forward the review of CO2 targets to 2025 because the requirement must be “practically feasible”.

BMW stressed that it has been preparing for continuous CO2 reduction targets in the transport sector. However, the EU must comprehensively and critically review the legislation on CO2 vehicles as announced, especially the planned ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2035.

The EU wants to further lower CO2 emissions limits by 2025 and is threatening steep fines.

Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is produced primarily by burning coal, oil, and gas. When its concentration in the atmosphere increases, the greenhouse effect occurs, meaning that the Earth’s climate is getting warmer.
