Blueberries last longer if you avoid common storage mistakes in the refrigerator

Blueberries will last longer if you skip one common step that many people do when preparing and cleaning them in the refrigerator.

Nathan Lyon, chef, cookbook author and host of A Lyon in the Kitchen on Discovery Health, explained how to best store blueberries.

Blueberries tend to spoil quickly, so they should not be stored at room temperature, an expert told Martha Stewart.

Two important rules are: Don’t wash them with water and don’t keep too many of them in one container.

And if there are more blueberries than you know what to do with, you can always add them to a pie, to decorate a dessert, or with yogurt in the morning.

You can extend the shelf life of blueberries by freezing them using simple instructions from Washington State University.

First, rinse the blueberries carefully and dry them completely before freezing. Proper drying is important so that the berries do not clump.

After that, arrange the washed and dried blueberries in one layer on the baking sheet. This step helps keep the berries separate and prevents them from sticking together.

Then put the baking sheet in the freezer and let the berries cool down solid.

Once the blueberries are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag for long-term storage.
