Before the launch, Bill Gates gave an interview to The Verge, in which he discussed the current boom in AI. He talked about, among other things: how he uses ChatGPT daily to get answers to questions in various fields, how he uses a bot to help with writing or summarize meetings he holds online in Teams. Although he praised Chatbot, he did not want to mention the potential increase in Microsoft’s financial involvement in OpenAI, hiding the fact that today he is “only” an advisor to the company he founded.
Is AI a threat? Bill Gates is an optimist
The billionaire was a bit more effusive when asked about the risks associated with the development of artificial intelligence, including predictions of destruction. It turns out that Gates is an optimist. He argues that in the short term he sees no dangers, but rather opportunities to use AI in a positive way. Especially in areas such as health and education. “In the next decade, thanks to AI, we will have an increase in productivity in many areas, which is good news,” he explained.
Interestingly, he’s not worried about the growing scale of misinformation that AI has become. “People don’t need AI to write crazy stuff. So, apart from creating deepfakes, I’m not sure that AI really changes anything in that sense,” he explains. “I would even say that when we talk about limiting misinformation, the role of AI can even be positive,” he continues.
Should AI be limited?
However, Bill Gates admitted that disinformation itself is a huge challenge today. In his opinion, to solve this problem, “the younger generation will have to find a compromise between freedom of expression and the threat of disinformation.”
