Asus was one of the first laptop manufacturers to get on board with the Snapdragon X Elite. When Qualcomm announced the new laptop chip and showed off all its capabilities, Asus jumped on board and introduced the Vivobook S15 OLED (S5507). It’s the first Vivobook with the chipset, and Asus claims it offers impressive performance in a slim package. I spent a few days testing the laptop to find out if those claims are true, and here’s what I found.
Our review unit, which comes with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, is priced at Rs 1,24,990 in the country and comes in Cool Silver colour.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED Design: Sleek and Slim
- Dimensions – 352.6mm (width) x 226.9mm (depth) x 14.7-15.9mm (height)
- Weight – 1.42 kg
- Colors – Cool Silver
The new Vivobook S15 OLED looks similar to the Intel Core Ultra model, but you’ll notice a few changes. It’s still a very clean design with a minimalist feel, which I really liked. You’ll find the new Vivobook logo on the lid, and another logo on the bottom bezel of the display. The laptop is 14.7mm thick at its thinnest point, with slightly curved edges, and weighs around 1.42kg. Asus has gone with an all-metal construction, but you’ll see some flex on the lid and keyboard area.
The hinges are sturdy, wobble-free, and support 180-degree movement. You can also easily lift the lid with one hand. There are also plenty of ports. On the right side, you’ll find two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.1, dual USB Type-C ports, a microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack on the left. There are vents on the back, and on the bottom, you’ll find multiple intake cutouts, along with dual speaker grilles.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED display: colorful and bright indoors
- Size – 15.6-inch OLED
- Resolution – 3K (2880 x 1620 pixels)
- Refresh rate – 120 Hz
Opening the lid reveals a colorful OLED display that offers 3K resolution, HDR support, and a 120Hz refresh rate with up to 600 nits of brightness. While the display is glossy, it’s great for viewing content or editing photos, as you get deep blacks and vibrant colors. The laptop offers decent brightness indoors, but I wish it were higher. I found the brightness to be insufficient when using it outdoors, mainly because the panel is glossy and reflective.
The display has super-slim bezels on the sides, and the top and bottom bezels are also quite thin. Asus also claims that the panel is TÜV Rheinland and SGS Eye Case Display certified. The fast refresh rate also makes the display more pleasant to look at.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED Keyboard, Touchpad, Speakers and Webcam
- Keyboard – Full-size ErgoSense with single-zone RGB backlighting
- Sound – Two speakers with Dolby Atmos technology
- Webcam – FHD IR camera with privacy shutter
The Vivobook S15 OLED has a full-size chiclet keyboard with single-zone RGB backlighting. There’s a bit of a gap between the keys; they offer 1.7mm of travel. It’s a comfortable keyboard to type on. However, I didn’t find the backlighting to be too bright, despite the keyboard offering three levels of brightness control. The silver keys are also hard to read during the day. You can change the backlight color using the MyAsus app. The arrow keys are also quite small, and since this is a Copilot+ computer, you get a dedicated Copilot key.
Below the keyboard is a large, slightly offset touchpad. It supports multi-touch gestures, is fluid in use, and offers good feedback. It’s a good touchpad, and I have no complaints.
When it comes to sound on the laptop, you have two downward-firing speakers on either side that are certified by Harmon Kardon. They can get loud, but there’s not much bass. Vocals are clear, there’s no tearing at full volume, and Dolby Atmos support provides a good surround experience when watching movies and videos.
The webcam is a full HD webcam with a physical privacy shutter, which is nice. The webcam kit also includes an infrared sensor for Windows Hello and a microphone. The quality is good in brightly lit rooms for videos and photos. However, low-light conditions will bring a lot of noise.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED Software: Basic with a Bit of AI
- Operating system – Windows 11 Home
- AI Features – Copilot, Live Captions, Cocreaetor, Recall
- Other Apps – MyAsus
The Vivobook S15 OLED S5507 is a Copilot+ computer, which means you get access to a few AI features like Live Captions, Cocreator, and Windows Studio Effects. Features like the controversial Recall haven’t been implemented yet, so I haven’t had a chance to test them out. You also get AI Super Resolution, which supposedly improves the gaming experience, but I haven’t actually run any games on this laptop.
Cocreator is a tool in Microsoft Paint that can finish unfinished artwork using AI in real time. It works, but not as well as I expected, but that’s probably because of my drawing skills. Live Captions is more useful because it provides real-time captions for all types of audio content. Finally, Windows Studio Effects is designed to help you have a better video chat experience.
There aren’t many Asus apps built in. You do get the MyAsus app, which you’ll need to control various system settings, install firmware updates, select fan profiles, and change the keyboard backlight.
When it comes to the overall software experience, the ARM platform still has a long way to go in terms of application compatibility. While the most commonly used browsers, media players, social media apps, editing tools, office tools, and coding programs support ARM, some non-traditional applications are still in beta.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED Performance: Solid
- Processor – Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100
- RAM – 16GB LPDDR5X
- Storage – Up to 1TB PCIe 4.0
- Graphics – Qualcomm Adreno graphics processor
Moving on to performance, the laptop handles most productivity apps well, even when running on the Balanced power profile. However, opening more than a dozen tabs in Google Chrome caused some hiccups. I believe this has more to do with the system draining the usable RAM than the Snapdragon X Elite. In the full performance profile, the processor can draw up to 50W, which is more than enough to run all sorts of productivity apps, editing tools, and streaming apps.
The laptop got a little warm to the touch during a few of our benchmarks, but that didn’t deter us from using it. Even when it got hot, it was mostly the top of the keyboard around the function row.
Benchmark | Result |
---|---|
Geekbench 6 Single | 2,331 |
Geekbench 6 Multi | 13 739 |
Geekbench AI NPU (quantized) | 21 978 |
The sign of the cross | 1,103 |
As you can see, the laptop scores quite well in Geekbench and CrossMark. There are a few games that can be played on the ARM chipset, but don’t expect much. The fans didn’t kick in during everyday use, which included using the laptop for work, watching YouTube videos, and editing photos. However, during heavy use, the fans did kick in, but they weren’t loud enough to distract you. You can only hear the fans kick in when running heavy apps. The built-in 1TB storage performed well in my tests.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED Battery: pretty good
- Capacity – 70 Wh
- Charger – adapter 90W
Long battery life is supposed to be a benefit of using the ARM chipset, and it seems to be, although it’s nowhere near what Asus claims. With normal use, the laptop easily lasts a full day of use. That’s with the brightness set to around 50 percent and the power profile set to Balanced. Add in some YouTube and Netflix streaming and the battery life drops a bit, but it’s still a decent all-day battery life. What’s amazing is the power draw when the laptop is in sleep mode. Thanks to the efficiency of the Snapdragon X Elite chipset, you can close the lid and not worry about the insane power draw.
The 90W power adapter also allows for fast battery charging. An hour of charging can provide up to 80 percent of the battery, and a full charge takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Asus Vivobook S15 OLED Verdict
Here’s what you can say about the Vivobook S15 OLED S5507 from Asus. Priced at Rs 1,24,990, the laptop isn’t cheap and competes with laptops like the Apple Macbook Air 15. While it can challenge Apple’s laptops when it comes to battery life and design, it falls short in the performance department as it only comes with 16GB of RAM in India.
However, if performance isn’t your top priority and you’ll be using it mostly for work that doesn’t require heavy video editing, then this is a great laptop. That said, it’s not like this laptop can’t do anything. It has a nice OLED display that’s great for consuming content, the design is a plus, and you also get great battery life. Overall, this is an excellent 15-inch laptop.
