During the recent iPhone 16 launch event, Apple also announced new Watch Series 10 models along with a new color option for the Watch Ultra 2, which also got a new titanium Milanese loop strap. We haven’t seen a new Apple Watch SE model (the brand’s budget series), which hasn’t been updated since 2022. According to a previous report, a new Apple Watch SE model with a plastic casing is still in development. It is said to be more affordable than the existing 2022 model and will reportedly launch next year.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is still working on a plastic Watch SE model, as indicated in an earlier edition of his PowerOn newsletter. While the earlier report merely revealed the existence of such a model, this one gives us more details about its existence, with subtle hints about its target audience.
Gurman states in his latest PowerOn newsletter that a new Apple Watch SE model with a plastic casing (or case) is still in development. It’s unclear whether that will be the only model to see the light of day, or if Apple will release a standard version of the watch with a metal casing alongside it. The source is certain that this plastic model will feature “bold colors,” reminiscent of the 2013 iPhone 5c, which took a similar approach to delivering an affordable iPhone.
Times are changing, though, and Gurman says Apple could be eyeing a much younger audience with its colorful new Apple Watch SE. The inexpensive watch could also be a good idea for schools in the U.S., which have begun banning smartphones during school hours. Hence, an inexpensive Apple Watch (with cellular connectivity, of course) could prove to be a very appealing option for school-age children.
While the plastic Watch SE model is still in development, things are moving forward, with the source saying a potential launch will take place next year. The switch to plastic has also caused some quality issues, but that is expected to happen more quickly once Apple completes its switch to titanium for its premium models.
Gurman states that the plastic Watch SE will also feature a “processor jump,” although it’s unclear what processor the new model will use. The current Apple Watch SE (2022) launched with the dual-core Apple S8 SiP. The Apple Watch Series 8 models also featured the same processor, but with larger display/body options (with Always-on), sapphire glass, and the ability to record electrocardiogram (ECG) readings.
