The Samsung Galaxy Ring is reportedly beyond repair if it breaks one of its parts or the battery runs out. According to the report, the design of the South Korean tech giant’s smart ring could be the reason why it is beyond repair, as the process requires opening the ring from the inside. The wearable’s internal circuit board connectivity is said to be made in such a way that attempting to disassemble the device could render it useless.
Samsung Galaxy Ring reportedly not repairable
According to a report by iFixit, the lithium-ion battery is one of the two main culprits behind the Galaxy Smart Ring’s lack of repairability. The publication highlights that the Galaxy Ring’s lithium-ion battery offers 400 usage cycles. However, once the battery degrades enough and runs out of juice, the Smart Ring reportedly becomes unrepairable because “you can’t get to the battery without destroying the device in the process.”
The publication also shared a computed tomography (CT) scan of the Samsung Galaxy Ring to show the second issue that leads to its irreversibility. The inside of the smart ring is reportedly encased in an epoxy resin shell, and inside that is where the lithium-ion battery and the rest of the circuitry reside. There is one problem, though. The circuit board is reportedly connected to the battery via a terminal connector.
For those unaware, a crimp connector is a solderless solution for connecting a printed circuit board (PCB) to a battery and an inductor. It is used in cases where a lack of space or the nature of the material makes it difficult to solder the parts. However, this creates a problem because you cannot reach the PCB without damaging the battery in the process, according to the report.
So, if the publication’s analysis and teardown are true, the Galaxy Smart Ring may become unusable if the battery runs out or the internal circuit board becomes damaged. For a device that’s meant to be worn all day, such damage may be difficult to avoid.
