Dresden
Another part of Dresden’s Carola Bridge has collapsed during demolition work. This is the bridge with tram tracks that had already partially collapsed into the Elbe River Wednesday night, a police spokesman said this morning. However, another bridge with a dedicated car lane remains standing. It was considered to be in very high danger of collapse.
It was announced Thursday afternoon that the damaged section of Dresden’s Carola Bridge will be completely demolished. Fire department spokesman Michael Claret said preparations for a controlled demolition were underway.
The 100-meter-long so-called Bridge C, which fell into the Elbe River on Wednesday night, is in danger of collapsing and cannot be supported. Laser measurements show that the debris is slowly sinking, Klahre said.
There is little time left to provide emergency services. According to the Dresden fire brigade, flooding of the Elbe River is expected from Sunday and this could significantly worsen the danger.
Heavy rain falls in Czech Republic
Heavy rain expected in the Czech Republic could cause flooding. According to the State Flood Center, rainfall amounts of up to 200 litres per square metre are expected in the Czech Republic and southern Poland in the Jizera and Giant Mountains within 72 hours until Monday. In the upper mountainous areas, up to 350 litres are possible. Rainfall is also expected to continue in eastern Saxony. In addition to the Elbe, flood warnings should also be issued for the Lusatian Neisse and Spree rivers.
The bridge, which is about 400 meters long, consists of three bridges connected by so-called crossbars. A large portion of Bridge C collapsed on Wednesday night.
