Supermarkets Aldi and Spar are urging shoppers not to buy popular foods because they may pose “health risks”.

50 foods sold in several retail stores have been subject to an emergency recall due to possible peanut contamination. The Food Standards Agency has raised the alarm and warns peanut allergy sufferers to avoid the recalled products.

The menu includes garlic and herb dip from Aldi, Domino’s dip pots, sandwich fillings and potato salad from Booker, as well as a range of sandwiches, wraps and pasta salads available from Spar.

Aldi has issued a warning notice stating: “Our supplier is recalling Carlos Takeaway Garlic & Herb Dip 100g as the product may contain an undeclared allergen (peanuts). Anyone who has purchased this product can return it to their nearest store for a full refund. Sorry this product did not match our normal high standards, and thank you for your cooperation.”

The FSA issued a statement: “FGS Ingredients Ltd is recalling a number of products containing mustard powder as they may contain peanuts. This means these products pose a potential health risk to anyone with a peanut allergy.”

They went on to explain: “Sometimes a food has a problem that shouldn’t be sold. It can then be ‘recalled’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product). Sometimes food has to be recalled or withdrawn from the market, if the allergy label is missing or incorrect, or if there is another risk of food allergy, the FSA issues an allergy warning.”

Domino’s has also issued a warning for its garlic and herb and honey and mustard dip pots due to a supplier quality issue. The company stated: “Due to a quality issue with our suppliers, we are recalling the above products as we have been informed that they may contain peanut residues which may pose a risk to customers with peanut allergies.

“This affects the above products that were delivered through Sunday, September 15, 2024. Customers who have these sauces at home should dispose of them. We apologize for the concern and inconvenience this may cause.”

Booker also announced the recall, stating, “Booker is recalling the aforementioned Jack’s Sandwich Fillers and Potato Salad purchased between the dates listed below due to the risk of peanut allergen contamination, which poses a food safety risk to anyone who may suffer from a peanut allergy.”

Elsewhere, an update has been published after a popular dinner dish was pulled from the market due to an unlisted ingredient. Earlier this week, the Food Standards Agency announced that Farmfoods had withdrawn its Qualiko Frozen Chicken Battered Premium Nuggets because they contain milk that is not declared on the label.

The FSA has now published a statement detailing the exact batch of products affected. Initially, all products were included, but now it has been narrowed down to products with a best before date of December 2025 inclusive.

The FSA stated: “This means the product poses a potential health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk ingredients. This alert has been updated to provide more information about the best before dates affected by this recall.”

Qualiko Frozen Chicken Battered Premium Nuggets

  • Package size: 1kg.
  • Batch code: 12123 and 12132.

The FSA added: “Farmfoods is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organizations who will inform their members of the recall. The company has also issued a point of sale notice to customers. These notices will tell customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they bought the product.

“If you have purchased the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk ingredients, please do not consume it. Instead, return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund. For more information, contact Farmfoods customer service on 0121 700 7160.”
