Defender Marina Hegering has announced the end of her career with the German national team. The 34-year-old, a former German Cup winner with VfL Wolfsburg, won bronze at the 2022 Olympic Games and silver at the European Championships with the German national team.
“I can tell you today that my time with the national team is almost over,” Hagerling said. “I’ve been able to play 42 international games, and if someone had told me that 10 years ago, I would have thought they were crazy. But I can actually call myself a national team player and that fills me with pure happiness and pride.”
National team coach Wück pays tribute to Hegering
After goalkeeper Merle Frohms, Hegering is the second-longest-performing player under new national team coach Christian Wück who will no longer play for the DFB team. “Marina Hegering has been the absolute top performer for the national team with her dedication, her strength in duels and her awareness of the situation. “She is one of those players who steps up and gives everything until the last minute and gives everything for the team,” Wück praised the defender.
DFB sporting director Nia Künzer also found words of praise: “Marina is a leader with coaching skills, passion, professionalism, determination and mental strength. Giving up was never an option for her,” Künzer said.
Hegerling made her international debut on 6 April 2019 in a 2-1 friendly win over Sweden. At the European Championships two years ago, she was named in the Tournament XI. Hegerling also played for Germany at the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.
