Worldwide, cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death, causing almost 18 million deaths each year. This includes conditions that affect the heart and circulatory system, such as strokes, coronary heart disease and heart failure.
And in the UK it is just as deadly, accounting for around a quarter of all deaths. That’s why spotting the warning signs before it’s too late can save a life.
Many of us are aware of some of the more common symptoms, such as chest pain. Others, however, are less well-known and less obvious.
In some cases, these symptoms can appear in the most unlikely places – including the skin.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), there is one distinct pattern on the skin that can be a sign of heart problems.
A blue or purple “web-like” pattern on your skin could be a sign of a blocked artery, the health authority warns.
This is called livedo reticularis, which is thought to be caused by blood vessel spasms or a problem with blood circulation near the surface of the skin.
However, in many cases it is nothing to worry about and can be caused by a number of factors, such as a cold or certain medications.
The AAD says, “Some people see this pattern on their skin when they feel cold. When their skin warms up, this pattern disappears.
“This pattern can also be seen when using certain drugs. If any of these cause a web-like pattern, it’s usually nothing to worry about.”
But it can also be a sign of something more serious. “This reticular pattern can also be a sign of a condition called cholesterol embolization syndrome, which occurs when small arteries become blocked,” says the AAD.
“A blockage can lead to tissue and organ damage, so it’s important to see a doctor to find out if you have an undiagnosed condition.”
The Mayo Clinic in the US adds that you should talk to your doctor if:
- Faded, mottled skin does not disappear with warming
- You have discolored, spotted skin and other symptoms that worry you
- Painful nodules develop on the damaged skin
- Ulcers develop on the damaged skin
- You also have a condition that affects the blood flow to your limbs
- Your skin symptoms are new and you have connective tissue disease.
Other warning signs of heart disease include:
- Chest pain
- Pain, weakness or numbness in the legs and/or arms
- Shortness of breath
- Very fast or slow heartbeat or palpitations
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
- Fatigue
- Swollen limbs.
