A popular paint color could cause Britons to lose more than 10 percent of their property’s value, a recent study has revealed.
Origin, a manufacturer of aluminum doors and windows, has revealed that Britons are willing to pay an average of five percent less for a property with an unpleasant color scheme.
The firm also found that nearly a fifth of Brits believe that a poor color scheme, either inside or outside a property, will knock more than 10 percent off a property’s value.
The average price of a house in the UK is £302,000, but a poor color choice can knock a whopping £15,000 off a home’s value.
Starting with Origin, we thought about why you should avoid bright and summery yellow. According to the study, 10% of UK homes currently have a yellow color scheme, meaning if a poor color scheme knocks more than 10% off a property’s value, sellers with yellow walls could see their home value plummet by £15,000.
Home interior design experts, The Inspired Room, agreed that the color yellow, especially ‘butter yellow’, is on the rise in 2024. They said: ‘Right now, butter yellow and English Country style are trending.’ However, as color trends come and go, it may be a bad idea to stick to this theme.
Experts at Origin claim that the British think yellow is the cheapest-looking color when associated with real estate.
Another color to avoid, which is also a hot topic right now, is pink. ‘Peach Fuzz’ is Pantone’s color of the year, but “heavy use of the color can also detract from a home’s value, with research showing that shades of pink are considered the ‘tackiest’ way to decorate a home,” Origin warns.
The third unexpected color is neutrals, so far the study has had very vivid and excellent colors, but the study has also warned against being too “dull”. The company warned: “Playing with beige may also affect the price of the property, as the British consider a neutral palette to be ‘boring’.”
“This is closely followed by gray, and the once desirable color is quickly losing popularity among homeowners,” claim experts. Google searches for gray homes have dropped by more than two-thirds since 2021.
If you’re looking for the best colors most likely to add value to homes, property owners should consider white, blue, and red.
White was voted both the coolest and most expensive-looking colour, blue is seen as a great option for a chic pop of colour, while an ‘unexpected red’ decor is taking social media by storm by adding the ‘wow’ factor to your home.
Origin’s color expert commented on the research: “It’s fascinating to see the stereotypes associated with certain color palettes, particularly shades like pinks and neutrals that are used in so many homes but seem to be falling out of favour.
“However, it’s heartening to see that Brits are still open to using bold colors both inside and outside their properties, as our research shows that in 2024, blues and reds will be coveted by style-conscious homebuyers.”
