Hair is one of the first things people notice about you, and it’s a crucial part of how you see yourself.
But as you get older, your hair can start to change – maybe the styles you rock no longer have the same effect, or your hair starts to feel different than it did when you were younger.
There are three things you can do to make sure your hair looks great and youthful—and make sure it doesn’t drag you down.
Nick Willis, Master Stylist at Charles Worthington Salons, has shared his expert tips with express.co.uk to help you stay stylish.
She said: “We want to look and feel our best and that includes looking and feeling our age or maybe even younger! What we don’t want is the hair that ages us!”
The biggest mistake she sees clients make is choosing the wrong hair color for their skin tone.
“With the wrong hair color, we can look washed out and tired; As we age our skin develops and we lose pigment, melanocytes, this can make us less radiant if we choose the wrong hair shades.”
Many people start to develop gray hair as they age, but this can be a blessing for some.
“On some skin tones, gray hair can look flat and too ashy,” comments Nick. “For some people, gray hair is a statement and looks great!”
He added that gray hair has an aging effect on people and can make you look years older, so adding high and low light could help it look younger.
These should be subtle and blend in with your natural hair color to last between test appointments.
It’s a common stereotype that older women often cut their hair short, but Nick believes long hair is anti-aging when done right.
“I recommend that my clients keep their hair medium to long; With the right shape and layering techniques, you can get movement and volume, both huge factors in looking and feeling younger!”
However, if you keep your hair long, you need to take some protective measures.
“Use restorative and moisturizing treatments at home and ask your stylist which are the best restorative products for your hair type. I love using Olaplex on my color, this is an advanced re-bonding treatment that repairs your hair and adds a youthful shine.
