Acne is often associated with teenagers, but it can also occur in adults for various reasons. According to the NHS, around three per cent of adults over 35 suffer from acne, and women are more prone to it than men.
To help, Dr. Scott Walter, known as @denverskindoc on TikTok, has shared a video on social media explaining how to quickly get rid of a sore spot.
In her video, she introduces Eve, one of their medical assistants, who has a persistent, painful acne bump on her face. He says, “Here’s Eve, one of our medical assistants. She came to me with this persistent, painful acne bump on the left side of her face. So we’re helping to resolve it with an ILK injection. ILK stands for Intralesional Kenalog—and Kenalog is a diluted steroid.”
Dr. Walter starts by sterilizing the skin with alcohol before injecting the ILK solution into the acne cup. She concludes, “That’s it. Usually these go away in a day or two. If done wrong, there can be unwanted side effects, so see a dermatologist if you want this done.”
For those looking for a home remedy for their skin problems, Dr. Walter recommends using 2.5% benzoyl peroxide overnight, which can be purchased at any local drugstore. According to the NHS, hormonal changes can trigger adult acne flare-ups, especially in women during menstruation or pregnancy.
Cosmetic products, medications, smoking and certain foods have been identified as potential acne triggers. One person commenting on Dr. Walter’s enlightening video shared, “These shots saved my skin and confidence when my cystic acne was bad!”
no one spoke up saying “I get these every time I microwave my skin – it’s amazing.” Meanwhile, a separate individual noted his own routine: “I use tea tree oil when I get home from work, then I put on a generic dermapoint patch overnight, then a panoxyl wash.”
However, another voice warned, “This left me with a very deep scar that I’ve had for years now. I’m so self-conscious about it.”
For those struggling with acne, consult a doctor for professional advice and treatment options. Further guidance is available on the NHS website.
In addition to this, the National Health Service recommends following this guide to banish spots…
- Do not wash affected skin areas more than twice a day. Repeated washing can irritate the skin and worsen the symptoms.
- Wash the exposed area with a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water. Very hot or cold water can make acne worse.
- Do not try to “clean” blackheads or squeeze spots. This can make them worse and cause permanent scarring.
- Avoid makeup, skin care, and sun care products that are oil-based (sometimes labeled as “comedogenic”). Use water-based non-comedogenic products as they are less likely to clog your skin pores.
- Remove makeup completely before going to bed.
- If dry skin is a problem, use a fragrance-free water-based emollient.
- Regular exercise can’t cure your acne, but it can improve your mood and boost your self-esteem. Shower as soon as possible after you finish your workout, as sweat can irritate your acne.
- Wash your hair regularly and try to avoid hair falling on your face.
