Firefighters rescued a 93-year-old woman who died after an apartment fire in Essen. The fire was reported on Friday evening, an Essen fire brigade spokesman said. When emergency services arrived at the apartment building, flames were already coming out of the windows of the affected apartments.
According to an Essen police spokesperson, it was initially unclear whether the elderly woman died as a result of the fire. A 44-year-old resident of the apartment building was taken to the hospital as a precaution. A fire brigade spokesman said that firefighters were able to end their operation after an hour and a half. The apartment building is temporarily shut down. Nothing was known about the cause of the fire or property damage as of Friday morning.
