Sergeant pcs. Małgorzata Staniszewska from the Wola police headquarters reported that the police were collecting evidence at the scene of the incident and looking for witnesses. She added that the activities of the officers are carried out in accordance with Art. 261 of the Criminal Code, i.e. insulting the sign. This may result in a fine or restriction of freedom.
The massacre of the inhabitants of the capital Wola lasted from 5 to 7 August 1944 – according to various estimates – from 40 to 60 thousand. residents of the district. The population was shot, and the bodies of the dead were burned. The large-scale extermination ended on 7 August, but continued on a smaller scale until 12 August, when General Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski, who commanded the operation to suppress the Warsaw Uprising, prohibited the killing of civilians.
After the war, none of the perpetrators of this crime were held accountable. For many years, the crimes committed in Wola were not sufficiently commemorated. It was only in 2004 that the monument to the Victims of the Wola Massacre was unveiled in the square at the junction of Solidarności Avenue and Leszno Street, called the Monument of 50,000. In 2010, the Warsaw City Council established August 5 as the Day of Remembrance for Wola Residents.
