Harris zeroes in on high food prices as inflation remains a big issue in the presidential race

WASHINGTON (AP) – Vice President Kamala Harris is zeroing in on high food prices as her campaign touts an economic policy speech she gives in North Carolina on Friday, vowing to push for a federal ban on food price gouging.

Harris pays particular attention to rising meat prices, which he says make up a large part of rising grocery bills.

Annual inflation has reached its lowest level in more than three years. But many in the U.S. are struggling with food prices that are still 21 percent higher than three years ago. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has pointed to inflation as the main failure of the Biden administration and its energy policies.

Harris is stressing food prices even beyond medical costs, the focus of an event Thursday with President Joe Biden in Maryland.

They report that drug price negotiations are knocking hundreds of dollars — in some cases, thousands — off the list price of Medicare’s 10 most popular and most expensive drugs.

Biden has sought to curb rising food prices, including a “competition council” that sought to reduce costs by increasing competition in the meat industry. This is part of a broader effort to show that his administration is trying to fight inflation.
