Elections: PF has arrested 31 candidates who still have arrest warrants
The Federal Police (PF) reported that it had arrested 31 candidates in the 2024 municipal elections as of Friday (20/9). Each had an open arrest warrant.
Based on the General Election Law, 15 days before the regional head elections, starting this Saturday (21/9), no candidate can be arrested because of a warrant in circulation. Exceptions only apply to flagrante delicto cases.
A survey by g1, released last week, showed that 61 candidates had outstanding arrest warrants. Among those cases were three murders and two rapes of vulnerable people.
The law does not prohibit candidates with arrest warrants from running for elected office. The Clean Records Act only stipulates that people convicted in court cannot access government positions.
O metropolitan city revealed, for example, that Djalma Candido Vieira (DC-GO), candidate for vice mayor of Santa Rita do Novo Destino, in the state of Goiás, had an open arrest warrant for raping a vulnerable person. He was arrested on Monday (16/9).
The first round of municipal elections is scheduled for October 6. If necessary, a second round should be held on the 27th of the same month.
