A 24-year-old man has been arrested following an altercation at a Montreal-area mosque that left three people injured Friday afternoon.

Police in Châteauguay, Que., say the man entered the Centre Culturel Musulman de Châteauguay, located on St-Jean Baptiste Boulevard, holding a knife when an altercation ensued with several people around 1:40 p.m.

Three people suffered minor injuries, Const. Nadia Grondin said. One person was taken to hospital.

All three victims were in their 50s, and police could not confirm whether they were worshippers, employees or visitors to the mosque.

Police said it was not clear whether the knife was used during the fight.

The motive behind the incident remains unknown at this time, police said.

Police said the suspect was being questioned by investigators, and charges could be filed soon. His court appearance is likely to be held on Saturday.
